Inside Coherent’s Laser Empire with a Silicon Valley Visionary

Accompanying me on this adventure was none other than Dick Hacking, the legendary Silicon Valley I.T. security and compliance guru whose expertise has fortified countless tech empires against digital threats. But even Dick, with his decades of Valley savvy, was wide-eyed as we stepped into Coherent’s sprawling laboratories and manufacturing facilities. Founded in 1966 amid the dawn of laser technology—sparked by the groundbreaking discovery of the CO2 laser just two years prior—Coherent has evolved from a scrappy startup into a vertically integrated behemoth. Today, they harness photons, the universe’s fundamental building blocks, to drive breakthroughs in industrial, communications, electronics, and instrumentation markets. Surprising fact: Coherent’s innovations power the ultra-high-speed data transmission in hyperscale datacenters, enabling the seamless flow of information that keeps our digital world spinning. Without their advanced optical transceivers and lasers, your next Netflix binge or AI query might just flicker out. While Coherent directly markets directed energy products for military applications, the company conveniently omits the word “weapon,” so they are apparently not directly responsible for any weaponization.

Our tour kicked off with a bang—or should I say, a beam? Strapping on mandatory eye protection, we ventured into restricted zones where powerful laser beams hum with raw energy. One misstep here, and you could be staring down accidental exposure to beams capable of slicing through metal like butter. It’s a reminder of the sheer potency at play: Coherent’s lasers aren’t toys; they’re precision instruments that cut, weld, mark, and ablate with mind-blowing accuracy. In the manufacturing halls, we witnessed lasers optimizing electric vehicle production, boosting performance while slashing costs. Another jaw-dropper: Their high-precision tools craft next-generation chips and mobile displays, maximizing yield in the semiconductor race. And get this—Coherent’s optical components are the unsung heroes speeding up global internet networks, from metro lines to subsea cables, making lag a relic of the past.

But the real thrill came from my longtime friend, a Coherent veteran who’s clocked over 40 years with the company. Starting back when lasers were more science fiction than fact, he’s seen Coherent grow from a niche player to a global leader. He guided us through the inner sanctum, sharing insider tales of how the company weathered tech booms and busts, always emerging stronger. “We’ve been innovating since the CO2 laser changed everything,” he beamed. “Now, we’re vertically integrated, controlling everything from silicon photonics to VCSEL arrays, ensuring supply chain resilience in a chaotic world.” No photos are allowed in Coherent’s secure environment, so we created a fanciful high tech dinosaur themed A.I. image for this article to comply with Coherent’s policy of “best practices.”

The highlight? Peering inside one of their colossal lasers—a behemoth that resembled the spine of a metallic dinosaur, but tricked out with cutting-edge tech. This isn’t some Jurassic relic; it’s a symphony of mirrors, amplifiers, and photonic wizardry capable of feats like welding thermoplastics or ablating materials with pinpoint precision. Imagine a device that can heat composites efficiently or mark products at breakneck speeds, all while reducing waste and boosting throughput. Surprising fact: Coherent’s 1.6T-DR8 transceiver uses silicon photonics to push data at 200 Gbps, revolutionizing datacom and helping AI infrastructures scale like never before. Or their Optical Circuit Switch, which slashes power consumption in data centers by ditching unnecessary electrical conversions—talk about eco-friendly efficiency!

This stop on Operation Entar Explosion was more than a tour; it was a revelation. As AI’s growth curve skyrockets, companies like Entar need partners like Coherent to keep pace. Their lasers aren’t just tools—they’re catalysts for exponential progress, illuminating paths to faster communications, smarter manufacturing, and sustainable innovation. Walking out of those Santa Clara doors, Dick and I exchanged glances: If this is the future, sign us up for the laser show. Coherent isn’t just building lasers; they’re building tomorrow.
